Huaca del Sol

On the banks of the Río Moche just south of Trujillo are two huge pyramidal adobe structures called Huaca del Sol, the Temple of the Sun, and Huaca de la Luna, Temple of the Moon.  This complex is generally considered to have been the ceremonial and political center of the Moche kingdom.  Huaca del Sol, imaged on the right, constructed throughout of adobe bricks, is by far the largest structure built in pre-Conquest Western Hemisphere.. The side facing the plaza has The view on the left shows the Huaca del Sol in the distance with the great plaza between the two pyramids occupying most of the image.  A number of sites being excavated by teams of archaeologists can be seen scattered across the plaza. Most of the many small depressions that can be seen pock marking the broad expanse, though, are remains of diggings by huaceros - grave robbers - some relatively modern, others undoubtedly going back hundreds of years. Beyond the Huaca del Sol you can see the fields that are irrigated by the Río XXXXX.  When the conquistadors occupied this area, they diverted the river in an attempt to expose the interior of the Huaca
